Where to find real Mexican crafts instead of the same printed magnets every airport sells.
Mercado de Artesanías La Ciudadela, a few blocks from the historic center near Metro Balderas, has around 350 stalls of alebrijes, textiles, and folk art from all over the country — it was built for the 1968 Olympics and has stayed the city’s default answer for a real souvenir ever since. In Coyoacán, Mercado de Coyoacán and the adjacent Jardín Centenario do something similar on a smaller, neighborhood scale: a two-story crafts market across the street from a park where weekend vendors sell pottery, textiles, and painted wood under the trees.
